Corrections Policy

Mistakes happen in reference work. What matters is how quickly and transparently they are fixed.

Reporting a problem

If you believe an entry, caption, image credit or link is wrong, write to [email protected] or use the contact page and choose “Correction request”. Please include the address of the page, the passage in question and, if you can, a source that supports the change. A reference from a museum, university, library or established reference work is the most useful.

What happens next

  1. The report is read and the passage is compared with the sources already cited and with any new source supplied.
  2. If the report is correct, the entry is amended and its last-reviewed date is updated.
  3. If the change alters a meaningful fact — a date, an attribution, a measurement, a technical description — a short correction note is added to the entry describing what changed.
  4. If the existing text is supported by the evidence, it stays. Where sources genuinely disagree, the entry is reworded to show the disagreement.

Images and rights notices

If you are the author or rights holder of an image and believe its credit or licence is recorded incorrectly, or that it has been used outside its licence, write to us with the page address and a link to your original. The image will be reviewed promptly and, where necessary, removed or re-credited.

What is not a correction

Differences of taste, requests to recommend products and requests to add promotional material are outside the scope of this policy.
